Anthony Jeselnik
I recently have watched a couple of Netflix specials produced by Anthony Jeselnik. His whole whole comedic repertoire is built on making jokes about sensitive issues in the media that most people feel should not make fun of. His latest special out on Netflix is called Fire in a Maternity Ward if that gives any sense of his comedic style. His inflection and presence on stage only adds fire to the traditionally unaccepted jokes. Anthony's shows have an odd affect on a crowd. The crowd has a very reserved laugh at first as people start to understand his comedic type but he makes them feel like it's ok to laugh at his jokes on the touchy topics he exploits. In my opinion these people feel safe laughing because the jokes are told by an established comedian. I feel if they were approached by a friend or someone on the street they would be appalled at the jokes they are hearing. Anthony definitely appeals to most peoples darker sense of humor which in my opinion is highly comedic to most. 10/10 would recommend.
This definitely sounds like a form of the incongruity theory in a release of nervous energy especially since unconventional topics are being laughed at.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very much like relief theory in ways. In relief theory, comedy allows us to get around internal inhibitions and censorship. It is interesting that you think that it is not just the quality of the humor but the context that helps this happen.
